In a tragic incident early Saturday morning, a Washington State Patrol trooper lost his life after being struck by a motorist on southbound Interstate 5 near 136th Street Northeast, according to a press release from the agency. The collision led to the closure of southbound I-5 just north of Marysville for several hours.

The State Patrol expressed their deepest condolences, stating, "We mourn the loss of all the brave men and women who have given their lives in service to our state and to public safety. Today, we hold a special place in our hearts for the families and colleagues of our fallen this morning."

Due to the ongoing investigation, all southbound lanes of I-5 in the vicinity of the accident scene remained closed for an extended period of time. Motorists were urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes until the scene could be cleared. Exit 206 on I-5 provided a detour for southbound drivers, while Highway 530 and Highway 9 also served as alternative routes.

The State Patrol emphasized the significance of the incident, stating, "There is a heavy law enforcement and first-responder presence at the scene, which will continue for many hours. We appreciate the patience of the public during this difficult time."

State Patrol Chief John Batiste planned to address the media regarding the tragic incident at a press conference held at the district headquarters in Marysville.

"This is a significant incident, and the roads will remain closed for many hours, certainly throughout the morning," said State Patrol spokesperson Chris Loftis, urging motorists to exercise caution and patience.

As the investigation into the collision continues, further updates are expected.
