**Commanders' Daniels Uncertain for Sunday's Game Against Bears Due to Rib Injury**
ASHBURN, Va. -- Washington Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels was absent from Wednesday's practice due to a rib injury, leaving his availability for Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears uncertain. After sustaining the injury during the first quarter of the Commanders' victory over the Carolina Panthers, head coach Dan Quinn categorized Daniels' status as "week-to-week."
While the Commanders, currently leading the NFC East with a 5-2 record, remain optimistic about Daniels' potential return, preparations are underway for backup Marcus Mariota to start if necessary. The team is hopeful Daniels can face off against Bears' quarterback Caleb Williams, in what would be an exciting matchup between the top two rookies from this year's NFL draft.
Quinn explained that Daniels is receiving ongoing treatment and is allowed to join team meetings and walk-throughs. The coach did not disclose whether Daniels would participate in Thursday or Friday's practice, planning to reassess the situation post-practice on Friday. "I want to make sure he can fully express himself and do all the things that make him uniquely special," Quinn stated.
Daniels has been diligent in his preparation since the spring, arriving at the facility around 5 a.m. and often conducting his own walk-throughs shortly thereafter. Known for his use of virtual reality technology to enhance game readiness—a practice he began last year at LSU—Daniels has quickly mastered Washington's offensive system.
The rookie's injury occurred on his first offensive play, a 46-yard run during which he awkwardly fell after being tackled. Daniels initially continued play but was soon sidelined after attempting a warm-up throw. Marcus Mariota then stepped in, completing 18 of 23 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns, leading the team to a 40-7 victory over Carolina.
Commanders linebacker Bobby Wagner praised Mariota's performance, acknowledging his preparation and readiness. "We've seen him play; I know he's a great player," Wagner remarked. "He took advantage of the opportunity and played the game that we see him play all the time."
Despite the uncertainty, Daniels' attitude remains positive according to Quinn, who emphasized that the decision to return would be based on Daniels' readiness rather than the high-profile matchup. "It's about him and the readiness to get ready and help our team," Quinn added, noting Daniels' strong rapport with his teammates.
For his part, Caleb Williams downplayed the media buzz, stating his primary focus is on winning games. "My job is to go win games on Thursdays, Sundays, and Mondays. That's it," Williams said, adding he hopes Daniels is able to play, as it enhances the competitive nature of the game.
Mariota, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 draft, offered his perspective on managing expectations and health as a rookie. "Early on in my career, you get very worked up about, 'I've got to play this week, I've got to play this week.' Sometimes it's focusing on your health in the long term," he advised.
As the Commanders prepare for Sunday, they remain hopeful for Daniels' quick recovery while also confident in Mariota's ability to lead the team if called upon.
