The trade sees goaltender Darcy Kuemper heading to the Kings in exchange for the talented 25-year-old Dubois, who will join his fourth team in five years.
Dubois, who was selected as the third pick in the 2016 NHL draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets, spent the early part of his career with the Blue Jackets before being traded to the Winnipeg Jets in January 2021. Last summer, he was traded to the Kings, signing an eight-year contract with an average annual value of $8.5 million.
Although Dubois' first season with the Kings did not meet expectations, the Washington Capitals are optimistic about unlocking his full potential. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 225 pounds, Dubois brings size, exceptional skating ability, and a high hockey IQ to the Capitals' lineup.
Speaking about the acquisition, Washington General Manager Brian MacLellan expressed his excitement about adding Dubois to the team's roster. He believes that Dubois has the potential to become a top-tier center in the NHL and expects him to thrive with increased responsibilities and opportunities in Washington.
The trade also marks the end of Darcy Kuemper's tenure with the Capitals. After losing his starting role to Charlie Lindgren last season, Kuemper's future in Washington seemed uncertain. With three years remaining on his contract, the Capitals faced challenges in finding a trade partner, but ultimately found a solution in the deal with the Kings.
While Dubois' recent track record raises questions about his consistency and commitment, his potential to be a game-changer on the ice is undeniable. The Capitals' coaching staff, led by Spencer Carbery, will work to harness Dubois' talents and help him reach his full potential.
Dubois' time with both the Blue Jackets and the Jets ended on a sour note, with disputes and eventual trades. However, he had a strong final season with the Jets, recording 63 points in 73 games. His stint with the Kings, although not as successful, saw him earn 40 points in 82 games.
If Dubois can find his stride and reach his ceiling, the Capitals may have found the answer to their quest for a top-line center. The team is hopeful that with their guidance and support, Dubois will prove to be a valuable addition to the roster.
The trade between the Capitals and the Kings comes less than two weeks before Dubois' full no-movement clause would have kicked in on July 1. The Capitals took this opportunity to secure the center without any restrictions.
The Capitals bid farewell to Kuemper and thanked him for his contributions both on and off the ice. With Kuemper's departure, Lindgren is expected to take on a more significant role in the team.
As the 2022-2023 NHL season approaches, excitement brews in Washington as the Capitals prepare to integrate Pierre-Luc Dubois into their lineup. The team is eager to see him unleash his potential and make a significant impact on their quest for success.
