Warren Buffett, the 93-year-old chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, has made a significant change to his estate plans by redirecting his considerable fortune away from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Buffett revealed that after his death, his wealth will be placed in a new charitable trust overseen by his three children.
Buffett expressed his confidence in his children's values and their ability to responsibly distribute his wealth. Each of his children already manages their own philanthropic organizations, reinforcing Buffett's belief in their ability to carry out his wishes effectively. The decision to exclude the Gates Foundation from his posthumous donations comes after several revisions to his will over the years.
Previously, Buffett's will stated that more than 99% of his estate would be dedicated to philanthropy, with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and four family charities as the beneficiaries. These four charities include the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, Sherwood Foundation, Howard G. Buffett Foundation, and NoVo Foundation.
While his intention is to exclude the Gates Foundation from his will, Buffett has indicated that he will continue to make donations to the foundation during his lifetime. Last week, Berkshire Hathaway announced that Buffett is converting approximately 9,000 Class A shares into over 13 million Class B shares. Out of these, around 9.3 million shares will be allocated to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust, with the remaining shares divided among the four family charities.
This latest move by Buffett underscores his generosity and commitment to philanthropy. Over the past 18 years, the billionaire investor has contributed over $43 billion to the Gates Foundation, earning him immense gratitude from the foundation's Chief Executive, Mark Suzman. It is important to note that this donation comes at a time when Melinda Gates recently announced her departure from the organization, with her last day being June 7.
In prior years, Buffett has consistently demonstrated his dedication to his family's charitable ventures, donating approximately $870 million and $750 million in 2021 and 2022, respectively. As of now, Buffett retains ownership of 207,963 Class A shares and 2,586 Class B shares of Berkshire Hathaway, with these shares valued at around $128 billion.
Warren Buffett's decision to redirect his philanthropic focus towards his children's trust highlights his confidence in the next generation's ability to carry forward his vision of giving. As his plans continue to evolve, the impact of Buffett's immense wealth on charitable causes is set to endure for generations to come.
