In a unanimous decision, the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District has given its approval for Walt Disney World Resort's expansion plans, effectively putting an end to the long-standing feud between the House of Mouse and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. The vote, which took place on Wednesday, greenlights Walt Disney Co.'s proposal to invest $8 billion in the first 10 years and potentially up to $17 billion over the next 10 to 20 years to expand its theme park complex in Orlando.

This expansion is a significant part of Walt Disney Co.'s ongoing investment spree in its "experiences" division, which primarily encompasses its global theme park empire. Furthermore, the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim is expected to undergo expansion as well, with a minimum investment of $1.9 billion.

The contentious battle between Disney and Governor DeSantis had its roots in 2022 when Disney voiced its opposition to the Governor's "Don't Say Gay" legislation, which prohibited the instruction of sexual orientation and gender identity in local schools. As a direct response, DeSantis took control of the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which had governed the land occupied by Walt Disney World for years but was essentially controlled by Disney-selected officials. Renaming it as the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, DeSantis appointed his allies to the governing body, leading to a series of lawsuits between Disney and the state.

However, tensions began to ease in March, following a settlement reached between Disney and the state of Florida in a separate lawsuit. This development came after DeSantis ended his presidential bid, in which he had used Disney as a prominent target. With the approval of the expansion plans, the path seems to be clear for both parties to move forward.

During Wednesday's meeting, local tourism executives and board members expressed their praise for the proposal, recognizing its potential economic impact on the state. Brian Aungst Jr., a board member, emphasized the intertwined nature of Walt Disney World with the state of Florida, stating that the success of the theme park translates to the success of Central Florida.

Walt Disney World Resort President Jeff Vahle expressed his excitement about the outcome, stating that the approved development agreement opens the doors for billions of dollars of investment in the resort. Vahle added that this investment would not only support the growth of the iconic destination but also contribute to the Florida economy, while providing guests with even more memorable experiences.

With the feud now in the past, Walt Disney World Resort can forge ahead with its expansion plans, bringing new attractions and experiences to visitors and further solidifying its status as a global entertainment and tourism hub.
