### Waffle House Shutters Tampa Locations as Hurricane Milton Approaches
Waffle House has preemptively closed its Tampa-area restaurants in anticipation of Hurricane Milton's landfall. This decision was made public on Tuesday through a social media post on X, where the company referred to the renowned "Waffle House Index" to underscore the severity of the incoming storm.
"Our #whindex status maps reflect our closures as of 2 p.m. today in advance of #HurricaneMilton. More updates to come. Please stay safe," the post read.
Forecasters from the National Hurricane Center have classified Hurricane Milton as a catastrophic Category 5 storm. As of early Wednesday, it was making its way across the Gulf of Mexico, with the potential to strike Florida's central west coast, encompassing Tampa, late Wednesday or early Thursday.
The Waffle House Index has proven to be a reliable gauge for assessing the potential impact of hurricanes and other natural disasters. Known for its resilience, the diner chain often keeps its doors open through various weather conditions. The index uses the operational status of nearly 1,600 Waffle House locations, predominantly in Southern and Gulf Coast states, to provide an indication of storm severity.
When a Waffle House remains open, even on a limited menu, it offers a beacon of hope to the community, suggesting the storm might not cause significant damage. Conversely, a closed Waffle House signals serious impending danger.
The Tuesday update showed a map highlighting that over two dozen Waffle House locations in Florida, including those in Tampa, St. Petersburg, Ft. Myers, and Bradenton, had been closed due to the approaching storm.
The Waffle House Index was introduced by former FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate in 2004. Fugate noticed that Waffle Houses remained operational in the aftermath of Hurricane Charley, even when many other facilities were closed or damaged. This observation led to the development of a color-coded map used to assess storm damage: Green indicates full operations, yellow signifies a limited menu due to constraints like generator power, and red means the location is closed, indicating severe damage.
The closure of Tampa-area Waffle House locations suggests that Hurricane Milton could bring substantial damage. The storm was upgraded back to a Category 5 on Tuesday and threatens to deliver a powerful blow to Tampa and St. Petersburg, potentially leading to severe storm surges and widespread destruction.
