**Virginia Tech Basketball Player Dismissed Following Gambling Investigation**
Hysier Miller, a standout transfer from Temple University, has been dismissed from the Virginia Tech Hokies men’s basketball program amidst an investigation into irregular wagering activity involving his former team. This update comes from sources at Sports Illustrated.
Miller, who led the Owls in scoring last season, transferred to Virginia Tech in the offseason. However, Temple found itself under scrutiny after a watchdog organization, U.S. Integrity, flagged unusual betting patterns on its games. The investigation, which has also drawn the attention of the NCAA, particularly focused on a game against the UAB Blazers on March 7. On the day of the game, the point spread fluctuated dramatically from UAB being a 1.5-point favorite in the morning to an eight-point favorite by mid-afternoon, finally settling at seven points. UAB won decisively, 100-72, with Miller scoring just eight points, half of his season average.
The March 7 game was the second consecutive loss for Temple, during which they also failed to meet the point spread in their previous matchup against Tulsa Golden Hurricane. Despite being favored by 5.5 points, the Owls lost by five, falling behind 16-2 at the start.
According to a March report, U.S. Integrity had been watching Temple's games for some time. The American Athletic Conference, like many NCAA conferences, uses U.S. Integrity to monitor gambling activities and educate athletes about the risks associated with wagering.
Temple ended their regular season with a 12-19 record but had a surprising performance in the AAC tournament, winning four consecutive games before losing to UAB in the championship. Miller was a standout during this tournament, averaging 27.8 points per game.
Miller entered the transfer portal soon after the season ended and considered other notable programs like Virginia, Providence, and Seton Hall before selecting Virginia Tech. However, new information emerged recently regarding Temple’s ongoing probe, leading to his dismissal from the Hokies. Assistant coach Kevin Giltner's social media update last Friday about Virginia Tech’s guard situation notably did not mention Miller.
Miller has yet to respond to requests for comment regarding his dismissal.
