### Villanova Joins Patriot League as Associate Member for Football Starting 2026

**BETHLEHEM, Pa.** – In a significant move for college football, the Patriot League has officially announced Villanova University as its newest associate member for football. Beginning the 2026 season, Villanova will become the 10th football member in the league. This follows the recent additions of Richmond and William & Mary, further strengthening the competition within the conference.

Patriot League Commissioner Jennifer Heppel expressed her enthusiasm over the inclusion of Villanova, highlighting the university's consistent excellence on the field and in academics. "The addition of Villanova as our 10th football member represents a significant and exciting moment for the Patriot League," Heppel stated. She pointed out that Villanova's premier status in the FCS and its commitment to academic achievement align well with the league's values.

Villanova Vice President and Director of Athletics Eric Roedl emphasized the strong fit between the university and the Patriot League. "We have great respect for the institutions that make up a very competitive FCS conference and we share in their strong academic missions," Roedl said. He noted that the geographic footprint of the Patriot League is ideal for Villanova and expressed confidence in the university's ability to continue its tradition of football excellence.

Colgate University President Brian W. Casey, who serves as Chair of the Patriot League Council of Presidents, welcomed Villanova to the league. "Villanova brings a tradition of athletic excellence that aligns perfectly with the League's core values," Casey remarked. He believes that this move deepens competitive relationships and enhances the league's dedication to both academic and athletic distinction.

Villanova Head Football Coach Mark Ferrante commented on the natural fit between his program and the Patriot League, citing the geographic alignment and shared values of member institutions. "We believe this move will foster strong regional rivalries while maintaining our commitment to excellence on and off the field," Ferrante said.

The Wildcats follow Georgetown as the latest addition to the league since 2001, during which the league has never hosted more than eight football-playing institutions until now. The expanded membership, featuring ten teams including Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Fordham, Georgetown, Richmond, and William & Mary, promises robust competition and opportunities for new rivalries and traditions.

Villanova, which will celebrate its 128th season of varsity football in 2025, is highly decorated with an FCS national championship in 2009, numerous playoff appearances, and several individual awards. The university's football program has long been distinguished by both its athletic and academic successes, maintaining high NCAA Academic Progress Rates and Graduation Success Rates.

As the Patriot League continues to build on its competitive reputation, the inclusion of Villanova is expected to bolster the league's visibility and success on the national stage. With every team set to play each other, the league aims to create compelling contests and deepened rivalries, further enhancing the excitement for student-athletes, coaches, and fans alike.
