### Justin Verlander Left Off Astros First-Round Playoff Roster
In an unexpected turn of events, veteran pitcher Justin Verlander will not feature in the Houston Astros' first-round playoff roster. Verlander, who previously enjoyed considerable success with both the Detroit Tigers and the Astros, is experiencing one of the most challenging seasons of his distinguished 19-year career.
At the age of 41, Verlander's stats this season have taken a hit, with a 5-6 record and a 5.48 ERA across 17 starts for the Astros in 2024. Shoulder inflammation sidelined him for two months, and despite a strong final appearance where he secured a win against Cleveland by allowing three earned runs in six innings, it wasn't enough to secure him a spot on the playoff roster.
Acknowledging the Astros' depth in starting pitching, including stars like Framber Valdez, Yusei Kikuchi, Ronel Blanco, and Hunter Brown, Verlander has gracefully accepted his role. Currently on the Astros' taxi squad, he remains available in case of any injuries but understands that he may have already pitched his final game this season.
Reflecting on his career, Verlander remarked, "Never know what's going to happen... I've got some work to do this offseason personally and that's going to happen after whatever happens in the playoffs." He expressed his gratitude for his time with the Astros, adding, "Love Houston, love the people, love my teammates. I've had an incredible run."
Verlander's journey began as a first-round pick by the Detroit Tigers in 2004. He led the team to two World Series appearances in 2006 and 2012, though both resulted in losses. After being traded to the Astros in August 2017, Verlander tasted victory in the World Series twice, in 2017 and 2022.
Both the Tigers and Astros finalized their first-round playoff rosters ahead of Tuesday's Game 1 at Minute Maid Park, leaving Verlander as a notable omission but ever the professional as he considers his future.
