In a highly anticipated Group B match at the Paris 2024 Olympics, the United States Women's National Team (USWNT) has revealed their starting lineup to face Germany. The game will take place on July 28th at the Stade de Marseille in Marseille, France, with a kickoff time of 9 p.m. local time, or 3 p.m. ET.
The starting XI for the USWNT against Germany remains unchanged from their previous match against Zambia. Lindsey Horan, the star midfielder, will earn her 152nd cap as she captains the team for the 30th time in her career. Horan has been instrumental for the national team this year, leading the U.S. in minutes played and making her 13th start of 2024. With two assists in the previous match against Zambia, Horan now joins an elite group of players to have multiple assists in an Olympic match.
Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher will make her 108th international appearance and her 11th start this year. Naeher has been in excellent form, keeping a clean sheet in the last three outings for the USWNT in both the World Cup and the Olympics. She has also accumulated nine shutouts in a total of 17 matches at world championships.
It is worth noting that Naeher is the lone player in the current squad who was part of the 2015 World Cup semifinal against Germany, which happens to be the last meeting between the two teams in a World Cup or Olympics.
Emily Fox, another key player on the American backline, will make her 11th start of 2024 and earn her 53rd cap for the USWNT. Fox made her Olympic debut against Zambia and emerged as a consistent performer, ranking second on the team in overall minutes played during the Tokyo Olympics.
Naomi Girma, a defensive stalwart, will earn her 36th cap for the USWNT and make her 10th appearance and start of 2024. Girma has played every minute in the last five matches for the national team at the World Cup and Olympics, making her a vital presence in defense.
Trinity Rodman, who scored the opening goal for the USWNT at the 2024 Olympics, will make her fourth consecutive start and her 32nd consecutive appearance overall for the team. Rodman marked her Olympics debut with a goal and became the seventh player in USWNT history to achieve this feat.
Crystal Dunn will earn her 151st cap and make her 17th consecutive start in World Cup or Olympic matches. Dunn's streak of 17 starts is the longest by any USWNT field player since Christie Pearce's run of 27 consecutive starts.
Mallory Swanson, currently tied for the top scorer position in the tournament alongside France's Marie-Antoinette Katoto, will make her fourth career start at the Olympics. Swanson has been in outstanding form, netting four goals in the competition, including the fastest two goals ever scored by a USWNT player.
Sophia Smith, who scored the equalizing goal in the USA's previous match against Germany, will make her 52nd international appearance and her sixth consecutive start at the World Cup or Olympics. Smith has been a prolific contributor, leading the U.S. with eight goal involvements in 2024.
Tierna Davidson, the youngest member of the 2019 World Cup champions, will earn her 62nd cap as she makes her 11th appearance and start of 2024. Davidson has been a consistent performer and spent time training in Germany with VfL Wolfsburg as part of her ongoing development.
Rose Lavelle, one of the most experienced players on the Olympic roster, will make her 103rd international appearance and her eighth appearance at the Olympics. Lavelle has shone in previous world championship events and scored her first Olympic goal in the group stage win over New Zealand.
Sam Coffey, the only player in the starting lineup without any prior world championship experience, will earn her 21st cap and make her 12th start of 2024. Coffey has emerged as a key contributor, ranking third on the team in total minutes played.
The USWNT is poised for an intense battle against Germany, with the starting lineup consisting of experienced and high-performing players. Fans around the world eagerly anticipate this clash between two powerhouse teams in the quest for Olympic gold.
