Usher's heartfelt acceptance speech at the BET Awards on Sunday, where he received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award, was marred by technical difficulties as large portions of his speech were inadvertently muted by the broadcasting network. The R&B icon's gratitude for his family, friends, and fans was unfortunately silenced, leading to disappointment among viewers and social media fans.
During his 13-minute speech, Usher expressed his appreciation for the people who have supported him throughout his career spanning over three decades. He began by acknowledging those who had been by his side, sharing humorous remarks about the timing of the award while also opening up about his journey from the beginning.
Reflecting on his early years, Usher spoke about how his father's absence motivated him to pursue his music career seriously. He also praised father-like figures who played a significant role in his success, though some of his heartfelt words were censored during the broadcast.
The silence during Usher's speech left viewers frustrated and led to a flurry of social media posts expressing disappointment. Fans expressed their discontent, with one Twitter user sarcastically stating that Usher's speech served as a "silent acceptance speech" for those watching at home.
BET later issued an apology and attributed the muting of Usher's speech to an audio malfunction. The network acknowledged their appreciation for Usher's participation in the event and promised an uninterrupted airing of the full speech across their platforms and during a Monday encore showing of the BET Awards.
The iconic singer, known for his Super Bowl halftime show performances, married Jennifer Goicoechea in Las Vegas after the Super Bowl, according to confirmed reports. The ceremony took place with close friends and family.
Aside from the speech mishap, Usher had a memorable night at the BET Awards, winning the Male R&B/Pop Artist prize in addition to receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award. He was also honored with an energetic tribute performance featuring musicians such as Donald Glover, Keke Palmer, and Teyana Taylor, who showcased Usher's popular hits.
BET has since released Usher's full unedited speech on YouTube, allowing fans to finally hear the singer's unfiltered words in a video titled "Usher is Unfiltered & Motivated While Accepting His Lifetime Achievement Award."
Despite the technical setback, Usher's remarkable career and his dedication to his craft were recognized and celebrated during the star-studded BET Awards, which showcased the richness of Black talent and culture. Hosted by Taraji P. Henson, the event saw notable wins by Tyla, Victoria Monét, Kendrick Lamar, and Regina King, among others.
As of now, Usher's team has not responded to requests for comment from The Times.
