The Coast Guard officials have confirmed that they are currently investigating the incident and assessing any potential impacts to sensitive sites in the area.

Coast Guard Rear Adm. Andrew Sugimoto, the commander of District 11, expressed that their utmost priority is to protect the environment and prevent any further incidents. They do not anticipate any significant impact on the shoreline as a result of the discharge.

Upon learning about the incident, CNN reached out to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to inquire if the department would assist in any cleanup efforts. However, it is yet to be confirmed if the department will be involved in the clean-up process.

This incident comes in the wake of another oil-related mishap that occurred off the coast of Huntington Beach in Southern California last week. In that incident, approximately 85 gallons of what appeared to be "lightly weathered crude oil" were discovered. The Coast Guard subsequently removed around 1,050 pounds of oily waste, sand, and tar balls from the shoreline. Additionally, they managed to retrieve an aquatic diving bird that had been impacted by the oil.

It is worth noting that these recent events took place more than two years after a major crude oil spill occurred in the Huntington Beach area of the Pacific Ocean in October 2021. During that incident, an estimated 131,000 gallons of crude oil were spilled from an Amplify Energy oil pipeline, resulting in the closure of local beaches for approximately one week.

The Coast Guard remains committed to environmental protection and ensuring the prevention of any future incidents at sea. Investigations into both the recent diesel fuel discharge and the previous crude oil spill are ongoing. CNN's Claire Colbert has contributed to the reporting of this incident.
