**Massive Ground Beef Recall Issued in Detroit Over E. Coli Concerns**
A Detroit-based company, Wolverine Packing Co., has initiated a recall of over 167,000 pounds of ground beef due to potential E. coli contamination. This urgent recall follows an outbreak that has already sickened 15 people in Minnesota, with illness onset dates ranging from November 2 to November 10.
The recall impacts fresh ground beef products bearing a use-by date of November 14 and frozen products that were produced on October 22. Consumers and businesses are advised to look for products with the establishment number "EST.2574B" on the label to identify the recalled beef.
The ground beef was distributed to restaurants nationwide, raising concerns about widespread exposure. The decision to recall was made after the Minnesota Department of Agriculture alerted the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) that individuals had reported illnesses after consuming ground beef.
FSIS was informed about the outbreak on November 13, and the connection to Wolverine Packing Co. products was confirmed when a ground beef sample tested positive for E. coli on November 20. In response, restaurants are instructed to check their inventories and discard or return the impacted beef to prevent further contamination.
E. coli infections can lead to serious health issues, and this recall highlights the importance of food safety in preventing outbreaks.
