### Bill Gates' $645 Million Hydrogen-Powered Superyacht Completes Sea Trials
Bill Gates' visionary $645 million superyacht, "Breakthrough," has successfully completed its rigorous sea trials just off the coast of IJmuiden, Amsterdam. This pioneering vessel, also known as Project 821, stands as the world’s first fuel-cell-powered superyacht. It offers a remarkable blend of luxury and eco-friendly innovation, setting new standards in the maritime industry.
This 390-foot behemoth operates on liquid hydrogen stored at an icy -423 degrees Fahrenheit—a temperature nearly as cold as outer space itself. The yacht’s intricate engineering includes double-walled tanks designed for this cryogenic fuel, enabling storage of approximately 543 kWh of energy. Sixteen compact fuel cells power the yacht’s systems with 92 square meters (around 4 tonnes) of hydrogen, making it possible for the vessel to function for a full week without requiring re-supply.
Beyond its green credentials, "Breakthrough" is replete with high-end features designed to captivate its elite clientele. The yacht houses a 27-foot contraflow pool, a semi-submerged Neptune lounge, and an ultra-clear glass atrium with a spiral staircase encircling an elevator. Fifteen spacious rooms comfortably accommodate up to 30 guests, ensuring a luxurious experience for all on board.
Despite the superyacht's completion, Bill Gates has chosen not to take ownership. However, the Feadship-crafted masterpiece still embodies his vision for sustainable luxury. The yacht operates in silent efficiency, free from the noise and fumes associated with traditional diesel engines, especially when cruising at 10 knots or anchored.
For those long transoceanic journeys where hydrogen might not be accessible, the vessel can utilize its 3,200 kW ABB pod drives powered by MTU generators running on HVO—a second-generation biofuel that reduces harmful emissions by 90 percent.
Inside "Breakthrough," a 'Nikki Beach'-inspired interior by RWD offers amenities such as a fully-equipped hospital, a cinema, a library, and a games room. The five-deck structure also features cozy coffee nooks and a basketball court, spread across four levels in a townhouse-style living arrangement.
The successful completion of the sea trials marks a milestone for maritime innovation and luxury, aligning perfectly with Gates' climate advocacy and commitment to groundbreaking ideas. The question now remains: which affluent buyer will step forward to claim this revolutionary, opulent vessel as their own?
