In a shocking turn of events, just 15 days after being hired, Greg Scruggs, the former NFL defensive lineman, has been arrested for allegedly operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Scruggs was hired as the University of Michigan's football team's defensive line coach on March 6, but now finds himself facing serious legal consequences.
According to Ann Arbor police, the 33-year-old was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated at 3 a.m. on Saturday, leading to his suspension by Michigan. The university took swift action, and new head coach Sherrone Moore expressed disappointment in Scruggs' actions, calling it an "unfortunate mistake."
Moore commended Scruggs for taking responsibility for his actions and making no excuses. However, Scruggs' arrest marks another setback for the coaching staff, which has experienced significant turnover in recent months. Moore replaced Jim Harbaugh after nine seasons, during which the team attained a long-coveted national championship.
In addition to Scruggs' dismissal, the university also announced the appointment of Wink Martindale as its defensive coordinator. Martindale previously served in the same role for the New York Giants for the past two seasons. Scruggs, on the other hand, had last coached the defensive line at Wisconsin in the previous season. He had also served as an assistant with the Cincinnati Bearcats and the New York Jets.
Scruggs, a former defensive lineman at Louisville from 2008 to 2011, coincided with Moore's early coaching career when the latter was a graduate assistant. The Cincinnati native was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the seventh round of the 2012 NFL Draft and played in 18 games over four seasons, including a stint with the Chicago Bears.
The University of Michigan will have to swiftly address the void left by Scruggs' departure, as they strive to maintain stability within their coaching staff. Scruggs' arrest serves as a stark reminder of the consequences that come with irresponsible actions, even for seasoned professionals.
