University of Iowa Women's Wrestling Team Crowned National Champions with Six Individual Titles

The University of Iowa women's wrestling team put on a dominant performance at the 2024 National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Tournament, bringing home the team title and producing six national champions. The Hawkeyes showcased their talent and prowess with a total of 10 All-Americans and a remarkable display of wrestling skills.

In the 101-pound category, Emilie Gonzalez, ranked number one, emerged victorious after a hard-fought match against second-ranked Sterling Dias. Gonzalez secured a 4-0 decision, claiming the first national title for the program. Ava Bayless, ranked second, also had a tight contest and managed to secure a 2-1 decision against Lock Haven's Kaelani Shufeldt, earning her first title in the 109-pound weight class.

The finals at 116 pounds saw an intense all-Iowa matchup between Brianna Gonzalez and Felicity Taylor. After a back-and-forth battle, Taylor emerged triumphant with a 9-2 decision to conclude her senior season with a well-deserved title. At 143 pounds, Reese Larramendy displayed her dominance with a pin in 4 minutes and 10 seconds, clinching the title against Aine Drury of King.

Marlynne Deede, the defending National Champion, lived up to expectations and secured her second title, this time representing the Hawkeyes. Competing in the 155-pound weight class, Deede claimed a 9-3 decision against Cheyenne Bowman from King. Kylie Welker showcased her prowess at 170 pounds, shutting the door on Yelena Makoyed with an 11-0 tech fall to secure both the individual and team national title for Iowa.

The outstanding performances by the Hawkeyes resulted in a total of 497 match points, including 25 tech falls and 18 pins. With impressive upsets and victories over ranked opponents, Iowa captured 8 upsets and 28 ranked victories during the tournament. The Gonzalez twins, Emilie and Brianna, finished their season with a combined record of 41-3, further highlighting the team's exceptional achievements.

Additionally, the six national champions from Iowa have earned qualification for the 2024 Olympic Team Trials, which will take place next month at Penn State University. The success of the Hawkeyes has been recognized with Clarissa Chun, the head coach, being named the 2024 NWCA Coach of the Year.

Reflecting on the team's accomplishments, Coach Chun expressed her pride in the unity and determination displayed by the Iowa women's wrestling team. She emphasized that they are only just beginning and acknowledged their relentless fight for the program, considering it an honor to work with them.
