In a statement released on Friday morning, United Airlines confirmed that one of its Boeing 737 planes rolled off the runway at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. The incident occurred around 8 a.m. as the flight was in the process of exiting the runway for the gate.
According to separate statements from both United Airlines and Houston Airports, the flight had originated from Memphis International Airport and had a total of 160 passengers and six crew members on board. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries among those on the flight.
Upon landing on the grass, passengers were safely deplaned on the taxiway and later transported to the terminal by buses. The incident did not cause any disruptions to other flights operating at the airport.
Houston Airports reassured the public that flight operations continued as usual on Friday, with flights coming in and departing without interruption. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will be conducting an investigation into the circumstances that led to the plane veering off the runway.
At this time, the specific cause of the incident remains unclear. Both United Airlines and Houston Airports are cooperating fully with the FAA investigation to determine what went wrong.
