Chicago-based airline United has introduced a new feature for its customers, aiming to provide them with real-time information and enhance their travel experience. Travelers affected by weather delays can now receive live radar maps through text messages sent by the carrier.

United stated that these radar maps display "weather details across flight paths" and serve to help customers understand how inclement weather in one part of the country can impact flights elsewhere. Weather is a common cause of flight delays, accounting for 22% of delays in the U.S. in March, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

The implementation of live radar map links is part of United's ongoing effort to provide travelers with as much real-time information as possible about their trip. The airline has leveraged generative artificial intelligence technology to help its employees craft the radar map messages and other communications related to delays.

"We know customers appreciate transparency, and by combining innovative technology-enabled tools with people power, we can give more people in-the-moment details about their flight," said United Chief Information Officer, Jason Birnbaum.

In addition to text messages, United's app also features links to weather maps in the flight status tab for all flights, ensuring that passengers have easy access to up-to-date weather information.

United has projected a record number of passengers for the summer, with more than 5 million travelers expected over the June 28 to July 8 holiday travel period alone. In 2023, the airline transported a total of 165 million passengers.

By providing live radar maps and real-time information, United aims to minimize confusion and inconvenience caused by weather delays and help passengers better plan their travel. This feature showcases the airline's commitment to improving traveler experience through innovative technology and transparent communication.
