City officials in downtown Los Angeles have taken action to secure an unfinished complex of high-rise towers that have fallen victim to vandalism and dangerous social media stunts. The project, dubbed the "graffiti towers," was started in 2015 by China Oceanwide Holdings but stalled in 2019 after the developer ran out of money. Now, the site has become a hotspot for trespassers, who have been able to access the property through torn holes in the fence and use it for hazardous activities like BASE jumping.

Concerns have been raised over the safety of the area, with fears that someone may lose their life due to the risky behavior exhibited by trespassers. City Councilmember Kevin de León has emphasized the need for a new developer to take over the project, estimating that it would require $500 million to purchase the property and $1.5 billion to complete construction. The situation has garnered attention as the extent of tagging and vandalism has increased in recent weeks, causing embarrassment in a prominent part of downtown Los Angeles.

The former ambitions of China Oceanwide Holdings to develop the towers have now been overshadowed by security issues and ongoing concerns about the state of the property. City officials are working to address the security vulnerabilities and restore order to the site, which is located in a high-profile area near popular venues like the Crypto.com Arena and the Los Angeles Convention Center. The future of the unfinished towers remains uncertain as efforts are made to rectify the current situation and bring the project to completion.
