In a much-anticipated announcement on Sunday night, the University of North Carolina (UNC) Tar Heels emerged as one of the top 16 national seeds for the upcoming NCAA baseball tournament. This achievement marks a significant milestone in the Tar Heels' journey to make a return to the College World Series for the first time since 2018.
UNC is one of five teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) to secure a national seed, highlighting the conference's strength in collegiate baseball. The complete 64-team tournament bracket will be unveiled on Monday, May 31, providing eager fans with a glimpse of the road to the championship. ESPN2 will broadcast the selection show at noon.
The Tar Heels' inclusion in the tournament comes as no surprise given their stellar performance this season. Boasting an impressive record of 42-13, UNC has demonstrated its dominance both at home and on the road. Under the guidance of fourth-year head coach Scott Forbes, who was named ACC Coach of the Year, the Tar Heels recorded an exceptional 32-2 record in home games. Their only losses at Boshamer Stadium came at the hands of Coastal Carolina and Virginia Tech.
UNC's strong performance at home sets them apart nationally, with only Tennessee and Arkansas amassing more victories on their respective home turfs. Showing resilience and tenacity, the Tar Heels maintained a consistent winning record throughout the season, solidifying their position as a force to be reckoned with.
With their 36th appearance in the NCAA baseball tournament, UNC is virtually guaranteed to play their initial games at home in Boshamer Stadium during the regional and super regional rounds. This preferential assignment provides the Tar Heels with a significant advantage as they seek to advance to the renowned College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
Boshamer Stadium has proven to be a fortress for the Tar Heels in previous tournaments, as evidenced by their impressive 33-8 record in regional games at home. Since the tournament's current format was implemented in 1999, UNC has progressed to the super regionals nine times, showcasing the team's ability to thrive under pressure.
The 2022 team, helmed by coach Forbes, emerged victorious in the previous Chapel Hill Regional, only to fall short against formidable opponents from Arkansas in the super regionals. This year, however, the Tar Heels are eager to build on their regular-season success, finishing with the best record in the ACC and securing their highest number of wins in seven years.
Recognized as the ACC team with the highest RPI (Ratings Percentage Index) in the conference, UNC has established itself as a formidable contender. The Tar Heels' position as the fourth-ranked team in RPI nationally, trailing only Tennessee, Texas A&M, and Kentucky, further solidifies their case for a coveted national seed.
Although UNC faced a setback in the ACC Tournament, suffering only their third loss in their last 16 games to Wake Forest, Coach Forbes remains optimistic. Reflecting on the defeat, Forbes emphasized the importance of learning from the experience and preparing for the forthcoming NCAA Tournament.
As the journey to the NCAA baseball championship begins, the Tar Heels are ready to capitalize on their national seed and showcase their prowess on the diamond. With the support of their devoted fanbase and the guidance of Coach Scott Forbes, UNC aims to make a triumphant return to the College World Series and potentially secure their first national title since 2018.
