Unarmed Hijacker Crashes Metro Bus into Los Angeles Hotel After Chaotic Chase

Late on Wednesday night, a Metro bus in downtown Los Angeles was hijacked by an armed man, resulting in a chaotic scene that culminated in a collision with cars and a hotel. The incident occurred around 11:40 p.m. near Georgia Street and Olympic Boulevard, close to the GRAMMY Museum at L.A. Live.

According to Metro, officers received reports that a man on the bus had brandished a gun, later confirmed to be a BB gun, and compelled the bus driver to drive to various locations. Security camera footage captured the bus colliding with multiple vehicles, including an intersection where another Metro bus driver had wisely stopped as the hijacked bus ran a red light and crossed the intersection. A dashcam video additionally recorded the bus racing past and the subsequent crash into the side of the upscale Ritz-Carlton Hotel.

Approximately an hour after the crash, the 24-year-old hijacker was apprehended in the vicinity, as he was riding a bicycle. Details regarding his motive remain unknown at this time. The bus driver and a woman in one of the struck cars sustained injuries, although specific information about their conditions has not been disclosed.

Amongst the vehicles struck by the bus were a black Mercedes Benz sedan near the hotel, an SUV, and another black Mercedes Benz sedan that appeared to collide with the bus as it disregarded a red light. Fortunately, the bus had no passengers on board at the time of the incident. It remained heavily damaged at the scene throughout the early hours of Thursday morning.

Law enforcement officials were able to recover the weapon, the BB gun, at the scene, further aiding in the ongoing investigation.
