In a bold move, the Ukrainian Armed Forces executed a second strike within 48 hours on a group of Russian troops congregating near the Dnipro River, resulting in the reported death of 60 Russian soldiers on a training ground near Kherson. The strike targeted the 328th Airborne Assault Regiment and 810th Separate Guards Marine Brigade, as confirmed by Natalya Humenyuk, spokesperson for Ukraine's AFU. The attack was carried out using artillery weapons, with suggestions pointing to HIMARS missiles as the weapon of choice.
The strike near Kherson follows a similar attack just over 48 hours earlier on troops from the 36th Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade in the Donetsk region. The previous strike resulted in 68 casualties. These targeted attacks on massed Russian troops seem to be a response to recent Russian movements closer to Ukrainian bridgeheads, specifically the one at Krynky where intense fighting has taken place.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu claimed the village of Krynky had been "cleared" of Ukrainian forces, but Ukrainian forces deny losing the Dnipro River bridgehead as alleged by Russia. The recent strikes on Russian troops seem to highlight the continued disregard or lack of awareness by Russian commanders regarding the long-range capabilities of the US HIMARS weapon system.
These strategic strikes by Ukrainian forces serve as a clear message of deterrence against further Russian aggression in Ukraine, as tensions continue to escalate in the region. The repeated targeting of Russian troops in open areas underscores the risks associated with massing troops in occupied territories, and the repercussions it can have on military operations.
