UFC President Dana White has broken his silence and expressed his frustration after a settlement agreement was denied by Judge Richard Boulware in the ongoing antitrust lawsuits surrounding the UFC. The proposed settlement would have seen the UFC pay $335 million to fighters, covering two separate lawsuits spanning from 2010 to the present day.
While the full reasoning behind Judge Boulware's decision has not been released yet, it is speculated that the judge took issue with the agreed-upon payout, considering it too low. Additionally, concerns were raised regarding arbitration and class-action waiver clauses in the fighters' existing contracts, specifically those representing fighters from 2017 to the present.
Dana White, who has previously distanced himself from the legal proceedings, felt compelled to address the situation after the settlement was shut down, despite both parties having agreed upon the terms. In an interview with Kevin Iole, White expressed his frustration, saying, "It's getting to a point now where this feels personal."
Highlighting a surprising connection, White mentioned that he and former UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta actually attended high school with Judge Boulware. However, White did not elaborate on the nature of their relationship or whether they were close friends during that time.
Reflecting on the judge's decision, White expressed confusion, stating, "I don't think I did anything to this guy. I don't know what the hell happened, but there's no doubt in my mind that this feels absolutely personal." Nevertheless, White acknowledged that the legal matters would be handled by their respective legal teams and that they would have to navigate through this situation.
The next step in the antitrust lawsuit process is a status conference scheduled for August 19, with the trial tentatively set to begin in October. This gives the UFC and the fighters involved in the lawsuits an opportunity to renegotiate and potentially reach a new settlement agreement that will satisfy Judge Boulware's concerns.
As the case continues to develop, it remains to be seen whether a revised settlement can be reached or if the lawsuit will proceed to trial. The outcome of this legal battle could significantly impact the future of the UFC and the way it operates within the combat sports industry.
