Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone, a UFC Hall of Famer, appeared firm in his decision to retire from fighting in 2022. However, less than three years later, the 41-year-old is planning a return to the octagon. Cerrone is not only aiming for a comeback but also hoping to break additional records and reach a milestone of 50 fights under the UFC family umbrella, which includes bouts across organizations such as UFC, WEC, Strikeforce, and PRIDE.
Cerrone's announcement to re-enter the ring prompted a conversation with former UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub. Schaub, who competed over a decade ago, understands the unwavering competitive spirit that drives athletes to consider such comebacks. After speaking with Cerrone, Schaub shared his insights with MMA Fighting, revealing that despite Cerrone's successful career outside the ring, his passion for fighting remains undiminished.
"Cowboy" Cerrone's enthusiasm for fighting isn't financially motivated, a point that Schaub highlighted. According to Schaub, unlike many who return to the sport chasing fame or money, Cerrone simply misses the thrill of competition. "He just wants to break that 50/50 club," Schaub noted, adding that Cerrone's excitement had even swayed him from trying to talk his friend out of the decision.
Interestingly, Cerrone's life outside the octagon is filled with adrenaline-fueled activities like off-road and trophy truck racing. Despite these pursuits, nothing compares to the rush of MMA for Cerrone. Schaub, who also races and understands the intensity of such sports, expressed marvel at Cerrone's unyielding desire to fight again.
However, Cerrone faces a significant challenge on his path back to the UFC, specifically concerning his use of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) during his retirement. While PEDs are not illegal outside the sport, Cerrone will need to undergo at least six months of clean tests under the UFC's anti-doping program before he can return to fighting. Schaub emphasized the difficulty of this transition, as it means relinquishing the benefits of substances like testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) and peptides that Cerrone has been using.
Reflecting on the UFC's rigorous anti-doping standards, Schaub expressed concern over the physical changes Cerrone will undergo when he discontinues these substances. Despite the daunting obstacles, Schaub is rooting for Cerrone's success and hopes UFC will provide him with manageable matchups rather than pitting him against younger fighters eager to make a name for themselves.
Overall, while Schaub is optimistic about Cerrone’s return, he stresses the importance of the UFC treating the seasoned fighter fairly, ensuring that his legacy and passion for the sport are both honored and preserved.
