In its continued commitment to athlete safety and the evolution of the sport, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has unveiled its new Official Fight Glove - the 3Eight and 5Eight. Set to make its debut at UFC 302 in Newark, NJ on June 1, this significant development comes after years of research and feedback from athletes, coaches, and scientific data.
The 3Eight and 5Eight gloves mark a notable departure from the fingerless gloves initially worn in the early days of the UFC. With advancements in design and technology, these gloves promise to raise the bar for the sport once again. Working closely with top designers, engineers, and athletes, UFC CEO and President Dana White expressed his confidence in the gloves' ability to transform the entire sport of MMA.
The new Official Fight Gloves have undergone significant improvements to enhance their fit, function, and technology. Notably, the gloves boast a reduced weight of 1 to 1.5 ounces from previous versions, making them lighter and more comfortable for fighters. Constructed from genuine leather, they are designed to provide a secure fit and maximum flexibility during fights.
Key to their performance is the VICIS RFLX foam layer stack technology, which features layers of foam separated by three slip-planes. This innovative design ensures enhanced impact absorption and flexibility. Furthermore, the gloves contain a data chip, enabling the UFC to authenticate their use in specific fights and by specific fighters.
Safety remains paramount in the development of these gloves. Addressing potential risks during grappling exchanges, a new wristband locking system eliminates the space that could allow opponents to grab hold of the gloves. Moreover, the gloves have been designed without seams, reducing the likelihood of abrasions and cuts. Additionally, padding has been strategically added to protect the vulnerable bone structure around the index and pinky fingers.
By introducing these advanced gloves, the UFC aims to provide a safer environment for fighters in the Octagon. The combination of improved fit, reduced weight, enhanced impact absorption, and added protection ensures that athletes can perform at their best while minimizing the risk of injury.
The new Official Fight Glove, the 3Eight and 5Eight, sets a new standard for MMA gloves with its focus on safety, performance, and technological advancements. With their debut at UFC 302, the gloves signal the ongoing evolution of the sport and the UFC's unwavering commitment to athlete well-being and the future of mixed martial arts.
