UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones has been summoned to court after being accused of threatening to kill a female anti-doping officer at his home in Albuquerque. The incident reportedly took place on March 30 and was reported to the police on Friday.
According to a police department report obtained by the BBC, the complainant stated that Jones was intoxicated and verbally threatened her, even taking her phone after he was asked to provide a urine sample in the presence of two anti-doping officers.
In response to these allegations, Jones posted a video on Instagram showing the two drug test officers leaving his home, apparently on good terms. He claimed that while he was frustrated with their supposed unprofessionalism and used profanity out of frustration, the encounter ended amicably with no threatening behavior.
The 36-year-old fighter has not participated in any fights since his victory over France's Ciryl Gane via submission in March 2023. Despite his impressive record, having only lost once against Matt Hamill in 2009, Jones has had his fair share of controversies in the past.
In 2018, Jones received a 15-month backdated ban for violating the UFC's anti-doping policy. He was stripped of his light-heavyweight title after testing positive for a banned substance before his bout at UFC 214 in 2017. However, the United States Anti-Doping Agency (Usada) concluded that Jones "was not intentionally cheating."
In 2023, Jones expressed relief, stating that he felt vindicated of being labeled a "steroid cheat" due to changes in threshold levels for certain prohibited drugs in 2019.
This latest development will surely add to the ongoing scrutiny and legal troubles surrounding Jon Jones. As the court proceedings continue, the future of the UFC heavyweight champion hangs in the balance, and fans await further updates on the case.
