In a surprising turn of events, Chicago's highly anticipated Lollapalooza music festival has experienced a major headliner change for its 2024 edition. Tyler, the Creator, one of the festival's much-anticipated performers, announced his cancellation on social media, leaving fans disappointed but making way for a new headliner.
Originally announced in March, the Lollapalooza 2024 lineup boasted an impressive list of artists including SZA, Blink-182, The Killers, Future X, Metro Boomin, Hozier, Stray Kids, Melanie Martinez, and Skrillex. Tyler, the Creator's inclusion was met with great excitement from festival-goers. However, the rapper took to the platform formerly known as Twitter, now X, to announce his decision to cancel both Lollapalooza and the upcoming Outside Lands festival in San Francisco.
Expressing remorse, Tyler, the Creator stated, "I hate saying this, but I have to cancel Lollapalooza and Outside Lands. I made a commitment that I can no longer keep, and that bums me out knowing how excited folks were." The festival organizers swiftly confirmed the change on their official Facebook page, apologizing for any inconvenience caused and revealing the replacement headliner, Megan Thee Stallion, who will now take the stage on Thursday, August 1st.
The news of Tyler, the Creator's withdrawal elicited mixed reactions from fans. While some expressed disappointment, claiming that the lineup had lost a significant artist, others welcomed the change, believing that Megan Thee Stallion's addition improved the overall experience.
Lollapalooza, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary in Chicago, will run from August 1st to August 4th in Grant Park. The festival has become a staple in the city since its inception in 2005, and recently inked a 10-year contract extension with Chicago, ensuring its presence for at least another decade. The terms of the agreement stipulate a maximum attendance cap of 115,000 attendees at any given time.
Last year, Lollapalooza hosted around 40 performers daily, including renowned headliners such as Kendrick Lamar, Billie Eilish, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. As anticipation continues to build for this year's event, fans can still expect a star-studded lineup despite the unexpected change.
