In a devastating incident, two lives were lost in a collision between an ambulance and a semi-truck in Garrard County. The tragic accident occurred at approximately 9 a.m. on Monday near the Rocky Top Food Market Shell station at the intersection of US 27 and Old US 27.

The Kentucky State Police reported that 44-year-old Cory Dunn of Lexington was driving the semi-truck east on Old Lexington Road when he attempted to make a left turn onto Lexington Road. Tragically, Dunn turned in front of a Somerset-Pulaski County ambulance, driven by 26-year-old EMT Chastian McWhorter of Albany. McWhorter, along with his passenger, 75-year-old Robert Caudill of Nancy, sustained fatal injuries in the collision and were pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner.

Another passenger in the ambulance, 23-year-old Bailey Haynes of Somerset, was taken to UK Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Meanwhile, Dunn also received medical attention at UK Hospital for his non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident has brought attention to the dangerous nature of the intersection where the crash occurred. Motorists in the area have expressed concerns regarding the limited visibility and the difficulty of gauging the speed of approaching vehicles, especially when making left turns. Some drivers have called for the installation of traffic lights or caution lights at the intersection to enhance safety.

The recent addition of street lights in the vicinity, implemented by the Garrard County Sheriff's Office a few weeks prior to the accident, was intended to improve visibility. However, drivers argue that a combination of poor visibility and excessive speeds among some motorists has contributed to the dangerous conditions at the intersection.

Residents like Steven Gilpin, who must travel on US 27 for their daily commute, have expressed their concerns and emphasized the importance of everyone's safe arrival at their destinations.

The investigation into the crash is currently ongoing, as authorities work to determine the exact cause of the collision. In the wake of this tragic event, the local community mourns the loss of two lives and hopes for improved safety measures to prevent future accidents at this perilous intersection.
