According to a recent CNN-SSRS poll, former President Donald Trump is leading President Joe Biden in Michigan as the 2024 presidential general election campaign begins. The poll found that Trump boasts an eight percentage-point lead over Biden in the Great Lakes State, where he won in 2016 but lost in 2020.
Among registered voters, Trump maintains 50% support compared to Biden's 42% in Michigan. Notably, Trump's key support comes from younger voters and independents. The poll found that Trump beat Biden 52% to 37% among voters aged 45 and younger, as well as 47% to 37% among independent voters.
However, the poll also revealed that Biden maintains a 21 percentage-point lead among voters of color in Michigan. Additionally, the data shows that only 46% of voters expressed satisfaction with their choice of candidates, with Republicans showing higher satisfaction at 65%.
Michigan, a swing state that went blue from 1992 to 2012, played a crucial role in both Trump's victory in 2016 and Biden's win in 2020, making it a significant battleground state for the upcoming election in 2024.
Meanwhile, in Pennsylvania, the poll found that Trump and Biden are tied at 46% among voters. Similar to Michigan, the data also shows that 47% of Pennsylvanians expressed dissatisfaction with their choice of candidates.
The CNN poll gathered responses from 1,097 registered voters in Michigan through online and telephone surveys. The survey was conducted from March 13 to March 18, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points. In Pennsylvania, the poll surveyed 1,132 registered voters during the same time period, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.
As the 2024 presidential campaign gains traction, these poll results highlight the competitive nature of the race, with Trump leading in Michigan and a tight race between Trump and Biden in Pennsylvania.
