In the aftermath of "True Detective: Night Country" fourth season finale, original creator Nic Pizzolatto sparked controversy by reposting negative comments on Instagram. The show, starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, came to an end on Feb. 18, but faced criticism for being "disrespectful and insulting" and a "hot mess." This season marked the first not written by Pizzolatto, although he remained an executive producer.
Pizzolatto took to Instagram to address fans' criticisms, creating a specific post for them to channel their feedback and urging them to refrain from spamming his other posts. He sarcastically invited fans to share their thoughts on the show in a designated space he created to centralize comments.
The controversy escalated after Pizzolatto initially expressed his dissatisfaction with "Night Country" during its run, discrediting the ties to his previous work. Following the finale, he reposted fan comments expressing outrage at the finale's resolutions, further fueling the backlash against him.
Kali Reis, who starred in the series alongside Foster, criticized Pizzolatto's decision to highlight negative reactions post-finale. In response to Pizzolatto's criticisms, Issa López, the creator of "Night Country," maintained that every storyteller is entitled to their reactions and emphasized her love for Pizzolatto's original work.
All episodes of "True Detective: Night Country" are now available for streaming on Max.
