TULSA, Okla. - In a heart-wrenching incident that has shaken the community, the cause of death of 16-year-old Nex Benedict has been officially confirmed as suicide, according to the report released by the Medical Examiner's office. The teenager tragically passed away the day after a violent altercation with three girls in a bathroom at Owasso Public Schools. This incident has caught national attention and ignited widespread protests against bullying, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community.

The release of the cause of death was delayed until the completion of the toxicology report by the Medical Examiner's office. After its publication, the Owasso Police Department issued a statement, acknowledging that they had suspected suicide as the cause of death from the beginning of their investigation. However, they chose to wait for the official findings from the Medical Examiner before making any conclusive statements. In light of this deeply saddening revelation, the Owasso Police Department has taken the opportunity to share resources for those experiencing crisis or contemplating suicide, directing them to the Oklahoma Mental Health Lifeline at 988.

Prior reports had revealed that Nex Benedict and their mother had contacted the authorities after Nex was involved in a physical altercation at school. Following their release from the hospital, Nex's mother, Sue Benedict, urgently called emergency services to their residence the following day. Nex was immediately transported to the hospital, where they were sadly pronounced dead on February 8th.

Subsequently, the Owasso Police released video footage and 911 calls related to the fight and tragic aftermath. This release painted a clearer picture of the incident and its devastating impact. Moreover, the incident prompted numerous organizations and groups to come forward in support of Nex. Students at Owasso Public Schools organized a walkout, demanding justice and an end to bullying. The Human Rights Campaign also penned a letter to the U.S. Department of Education, demanding an investigation into Owasso Public Schools. As a result, the district is now under investigation.

In response to the ongoing outcry, the Owasso School Board convened a meeting on March 11th, which attracted protesters expressing their concerns about Nex's death and the pervasive issue of bullying in schools. While 2 News reached out to Owasso Public Schools for comment, they are currently awaiting a response.
