In Renton, King County, a devastating multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of SE 192nd Street and 140th Ave SE has resulted in the deaths of four individuals. The King County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) has identified the victims as a 38-year-old woman, a 13-year-old girl, a 12-year-old girl, and a 12-year-old boy. Their identities have not been released to the public at this time.
The Renton School District (RSD) confirmed that the three children who tragically lost their lives in the crash were involved in their H.O.M.E. program. The program, which serves 130 students and 80 parents, aims to provide families with guidance, resources, and a collaborative learning environment for their children's individual, social, and academic success.
In addition to the fatalities, three individuals sustained life-threatening injuries and were transported to the hospital for treatment. Another person suffered minor injuries. The causing driver, an 18-year-old male, was among those injured and is currently under guard at Harborview Medical Center. Criminal charges are pending against him, according to the KCSO.
Photos from the scene depict the aftermath of the collision, with at least one vehicle overturned. While the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation by the KCSO's Major Accident Response Unit, preliminary information suggests that speed may have played a role.
Deputies and firefighters from the KCSO and local fire departments promptly responded to the crash, which occurred shortly before 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday. The incident was classified as a mass casualty incident due to the number of patients involved, prompting an extensive deployment of resources from Puget Sound Fire, Renton Regional Fire Authority, and King County Medic One.
The roadway at the crash site remained closed for approximately seven hours to facilitate investigations and clean-up, finally reopening to traffic at 7:45 p.m.
Expressing condolences to the families affected by this unimaginable tragedy, the KCSO urged anyone with information about the crash to contact them via email at KCSO.MarrUnitTips@kingcounty.gov. As the investigation unfolds, updates on this heartbreaking incident will be provided.
