In a devastating incident, a boat carrying migrants has capsized off the coast of Senegal, leading to the loss of at least 26 lives. The wooden fishing vessel, with over 100 people onboard, sank just 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) into its voyage. Rescue operations are currently underway, while distraught relatives anxiously gather along the beach, desperate for updates on their loved ones.

The ill-fated journey began in Mbour, located approximately 80 kilometers south of the Senegalese capital, Dakar. The destination for these migrants was Spain's Canary Islands, situated off the coast of West Africa. In recent times, the number of individuals departing from West Africa through Senegal has seen a significant rise.

Mostly comprised of young men escaping conflict, poverty, and unemployment, migrants are increasingly attempting the perilous Atlantic route towards the Spanish archipelago. This year alone, nearly 30,000 arrivals have been recorded on the route. While the Mediterranean Sea route remains the most popular, a growing number of West African migrants are now opting for the Atlantic Ocean passage to reach the Canary Islands.

The surge in migrants undertaking this dangerous crossing has caught the attention of European nations, particularly Spain, which has been receiving a high number of migrants. In response, Spain's Prime Minister recently embarked on a diplomatic mission, visiting three West African countries - Senegal, Mauritania, and The Gambia, for crisis talks with regional leaders. The aim of these discussions was to address the escalating migration issue and seek potential solutions.

Significant efforts have already been made to enhance border security, including a $227 million deal between the European Union and Mauritania. Spain's involvement in talks with Mauritania played a crucial role in reaching this agreement. However, the tragic incident off Senegal's coast underscores the continued urgency in addressing the complex challenges associated with irregular migration.

As authorities strive to recapture the remaining survivors and offer support to the affected families, the world mourns the loss of lives in this latest maritime tragedy. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the risks undertaken by individuals fleeing dire circumstances in search of a better life.
