Tornado Watch Issued for Minnesota as Severe Storms Threaten the State

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Storm Prediction Center has issued a tornado watch, Tornado Watch Number 433, for parts of Minnesota. The watch is in effect from 125 PM until 800 PM CDT on Tuesday, June 18, 2024.
According to the Storm Prediction Center, the tornado watch covers the area approximately along and 65 statute miles east and west of a line from 50 miles northwest of Ely, MN, to 30 miles east southeast of Worthington, MN. It warns of the potential for severe weather conditions, including a few tornadoes, scattered damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, and scattered large hail events, with isolated instances of very large hail up to 2 inches in diameter.
The storms are expected to develop along and ahead of a cold front and move east-northeastward across Minnesota during Tuesday afternoon and evening. The most likely time for the storms to impact the greater Twin Cities area is between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.
The Storm Prediction Center has predicted the likely progression of the storm line using NOAA's FV3 model between 4 p.m. and 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday. This provides a visual representation of the expected path and strength of the storm system.
