In a worst-case scenario where Kyle Larson is forced to withdraw from the 108th Running of the Indianapolis 500, Arrow McLaren will call upon Tony Kanaan as a backup option. Larson, who is making his debut in the Indy 500, is also scheduled to compete in the 600-mile NASCAR Cup Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 26.
Given the unpredictable weather conditions, including rain that limited Tuesday's practice session, contingency plans have been a topic of discussion regarding Larson's logistics. In the event of any complications, Larson, who is currently leading the Cup Series championship, would pass the baton to Tony Kanaan, the 2013 Indy 500 winner.
Larson expressed hope that such a situation does not arise, given the priority of the NASCAR Cup Series championship and the importance of the Coca-Cola 600 race on Memorial Day weekend. However, Kanaan stands ready to fill in for Larson if necessary.
A complication arises as Kanaan, who has already prepared his helmet and firesuit, will not be allowed to perform his refresher in the last two phases if Larson remains in the race. IndyCar has confirmed that Kanaan cannot be brought in as a relief driver after a certain number of laps, unlike past instances such as the 2004 Indy 500.
In that particular race, Jacque Lazier substituted for Robby Gordon after rain delayed the start of the race, and Gordon had to leave for the Cup race in Charlotte. However, IndyCar's current stance does not permit relief drivers like Kanaan to step in.
Larson, who joins a select group of drivers attempting 'the double', remains at the mercy of Mother Nature in the days ahead. Despite the uncertainty, Larson is focused on soaking in the experience of racing in an Indy car at the prestigious Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
"I get excited about learning new things and being presented a new challenge, which an Indy car is. Racing against other drivers that I've watched on TV for quite a while is what I get most excited about," Larson expressed. "But mostly, just learning and seeing how quickly you can learn and if you can be competitive. I'm just excited to learn something new."
As the Indy 500 approaches, fans and teams alike are hoping for favorable conditions that allow Larson to fulfill his commitments in both the iconic races. In the meantime, Tony Kanaan stands ready as a potential backup, should circumstances require Larson's withdrawal from the Indy 500.
