CROMWELL, Conn. - Tom Kim displayed remarkable skill on a soft and vulnerable course on Saturday at the rain-delayed Travelers Championship, holding onto his lead with a stellar 5-under 65. As darkness fell, Kim successfully secured par on the last hole to maintain his one-shot lead over Scottie Scheffler and Akshay Bhatia.
The day began with Cameron Young stealing the spotlight as he shot an impressive 59, becoming the 13th player in PGA Tour history to achieve a sub-60 round. The rain then softened the course even further, offering favorable conditions for Kim, Scheffler, and Xander Schauffele as they raced against time.
Scheffler, the world's top-ranked player, had a bumpy start with a couple of bogeys on the 11th and 14th holes. However, he swiftly recovered by carding four consecutive birdies. Reflecting on his performance, Scheffler expressed frustration after the bogey on the 14th, but was pleased with his rebound, stating, "It was nice to bounce back and finish it the way I did." His final shot on the 18th left his wedge just an inch away from the cup, allowing him to tap in for a remarkable 64. Bhatia, the two-time PGA Tour winner, matched Scheffler's score with a 25-foot birdie putt.
Schauffele also showcased solid play, maintaining a bogey-free round until the final hole. Unfortunately, his 3-foot par putt circled the cup and ultimately resulted in a bogey, leaving him at 64. Sungjae Im made an impressive birdie putt from around 40 feet on the last hole, bringing him within two shots of the lead.
Leading the pack going into the final round is the young and talented Tom Kim, who celebrated his 22nd birthday on Friday. Currently standing at 18-under 192, Kim acknowledges the competitiveness of the field, stating, "It's a stacked leaderboard. Out here, a five-, six-shot lead is not safe at all. So I've got to go out tomorrow and do the same game plan and execute."
With 10 players within five shots of the lead, the final round promises to be an intense battle. Notably, Young, who started the day tied for 43rd place, made a remarkable surge. Scoring five under through four holes and achieving an eagle on the 280-yard 15th hole, he finished strong with a birdie on the 17th, bringing him to 11 under.
As the Travelers Championship charges towards its climactic finish, avid golf fans eagerly await an exciting conclusion to this tightly contested tournament.
