Tom Hanks and Robin Wright will be collaborating once again in the highly-anticipated film "Here," directed by Robert Zemeckis, the visionary behind "Forrest Gump." The movie, based on Richard McGuire's 2014 graphic novel, takes place over a century in a single location, offering a unique storytelling approach.
In "Here," the camera remains fixed inside a home for the entire 104-minute runtime, providing viewers with the intriguing tales of the people who have called it their own. Zemeckis described the film's ambitious concept to Vanity Fair, stating that while the single perspective never changes, everything around it evolves, making it a truly unprecedented endeavor.
Both Hanks and Wright will portray the central couple in the film. Hanks will play the character of Richard, a baby boomer, while Wright takes on the role of Margaret, Richard's teenage girlfriend turned wife. Through the use of traditional makeup effects and digital de-aging technology, Hanks will appear as young as a teenager and as old as an 80-year-old, spanning the decades covered in the film.
Zemeckis emphasized that the visual effects in "Here" serve to enhance the character development, rather than being the sole focus of the film. He stated that his intention as a filmmaker is to present the audience with experiences and perspectives that they don't typically encounter in real life.
The supporting cast of "Here" includes Paul Bettany and Kelly Reilly, who portray Richard's parents, Al and Rose. Additionally, Michelle Dockery and Gwilym Lee will bring to life a couple from the turn of the 20th century, while David Fynn and Ophelia Lovibond will portray an inventor and a pin-up model from the 1920s.
While de-aging effects have been attempted in previous films, not all audiences have been won over by their effectiveness. Filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Ang Lee, and James Mangold have utilized de-aging technology to rejuvenate stars such as Robert De Niro, Will Smith, and Harrison Ford, respectively. However, some moviegoers remain skeptical of the results. George Miller even cited the flawed de-aging effects seen in films like "The Irishman" as a reason for his decision not to de-age Charlize Theron for the upcoming "Mad Max" prequel.
"Here" promises to present a thought-provoking meditation on mortality, exploring the universal theme that everything eventually comes to an end. With the talents of Hanks, Wright, and the visionary direction of Zemeckis, film enthusiasts eagerly await this captivating journey through time and space within the confines of a single location.
