**Minnesota Resident Dies from Rare Rabies Case Linked to Bat Exposure**

The Minnesota Department of Health has reported that a resident who had contact with a bat in July has succumbed to rabies. This rare fatality underscores the importance of vigilance around wildlife, particularly bats.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), fewer than 10 people in the United States die from rabies each year, making this incident particularly uncommon. The deceased individual, aged over 65, was exposed to a bat in western Minnesota during July. The CDC laboratory in Atlanta confirmed the rabies diagnosis on September 20.

In a news release, state health officials indicated they are assessing if more individuals were exposed to the virus, though they stressed there is no ongoing risk to the general public. The tragic event has prompted officials to remind the public to avoid contact with bats. Due to their small teeth, a bat bite may not be felt or leave visible marks.

Rabies is a viral disease that targets the central nervous system and is almost always fatal if untreated. However, rapid post-exposure treatment is highly effective in preventing the onset of the disease. This treatment needs to be initiated before any symptoms appear for it to be effective.

Dr. Stacy Holzbauer, the state public health veterinarian, has also recommended that people ensure their household pets and livestock are vaccinated against rabies. Historically, the number of rabies-related deaths in the U.S. has dramatically decreased from over 100 annually in the early 1900s to fewer than five cases each year more recently. Approximately 70% of the rabies infections acquired in the U.S. stem from bat encounters.
