Central Florida-based Tex-Mex chain, Tijuana Flats, announced on Saturday that a new ownership group, Flatheads, LLC, has acquired the brand with plans to revitalize its restaurants and enhance the overall customer experience. The change in ownership comes after Tijuana Flats filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, resulting in the closure of 11 locations last week.

The decision to close the restaurants was based on a thorough evaluation of financial performance, occupancy costs, and market conditions. Among the impacted locations are two in Tampa, situated at 4027 S. Dale Mabry Highway and 17501 Preserve Walk Lane, as well as one in Sarasota at 1635 S. Tamiami Trail.

However, Tijuana Flats assured its franchisees and customers that the remaining locations in the Tampa Bay area will continue to operate as usual. At least five locations in Pinellas County, including Fourth Street North, Tyrone Boulevard, and Roosevelt Boulevard in St. Petersburg, and Belcher Road and Seminole Boulevard in Largo, will remain open. Additionally, the Tampa location on Platt Street will continue to serve customers.

The sale of Tijuana Flats and subsequent closure of select locations were the culmination of a strategic review that began in November 2023. The company explored various options, ultimately leading to the decision to seek new ownership.

Tijuana Flats, founded almost 30 years ago, had previously been owned by TJF USA LLC. The brand's executives expressed optimism about the future under the new ownership, highlighting their commitment to revitalizing the restaurants and delivering an enhanced customer experience.

The Tex-Mex chain emphasized that despite the changes, it will continue to provide full support to its franchisees, ensuring the smooth operation of the remaining locations.

As Tijuana Flats undergoes this period of transition, customers can expect exciting changes ahead as the brand aims to reinvigorate its culinary offerings and create a more memorable dining experience.
