In an unsettling incident near Easton, Pennsylvania, three Norfolk Southern trains collided and derailed on Saturday morning, prompting an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The collision resulted in scattered railroad cars along a riverbank, with at least one partially submerged in the river.

Fortunately, Norfolk Southern has confirmed that there is no immediate threat to public safety, and there have been no reports of injuries or concerns regarding hazardous materials. The company expressed its gratitude for the swift and professional response from local emergency agencies, with crews and contractors already on the scene to develop a clean-up plan.

According to initial findings by the NTSB, an eastbound train collided with a stationary train on the same track, causing the wreckage to spill onto a nearby track. In an unfortunate sequence of events, a westbound train then struck the debris from the collision. It is important to note that all three trains involved were operated by Norfolk Southern.

Emergency personnel from the Lower Saucon Township police department were dispatched at 7:15 a.m. on Saturday morning. The exact number of cars involved in the incident remains unclear. However, photos shared by the Nancy Run Fire Company reveal multiple railroad cars scattered along the riverbank, with one partially submerged.

Norfolk Southern promptly responded to the situation by deploying containment booms and initiating the process of vacuuming out the diesel from the affected area. Additionally, the clean-up efforts will include removing polypropylene plastic pellets, ensuring environmental safety.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his vigilance in monitoring the situation and maintaining communication with local officials. Governor Shapiro commended the readiness and training of the Lower Saucon Township emergency services, emphasizing the importance of their prompt response.

Witness accounts of the incident have also surfaced. Gary Weiland, a resident of Bethlehem Township across the river, described hearing two separate crashing sounds. The second sound was accompanied by the sight of a splash, leading Weiland to suspect a train derailment.

The NTSB has announced that its investigation team is set to arrive on the scene later on Saturday, with the aim of determining the cause behind the derailment. At this stage, however, no immediate information regarding the exact cause has been released.

As investigators continue their work, Norfolk Southern and the relevant authorities will focus on the careful cleanup of the derailed trains, ensuring the safety of the surrounding community and safeguarding the environment against potential spills or contamination.
