Three Mile Island, the site of the worst commercial nuclear accident in U.S. history, is set to reopen to power Microsoft's data centers. Constellation Energy, known for producing clean, carbon-free energy, announced that it had signed a significant power purchase agreement with Microsoft, marking their largest collaboration to date. The agreement, spanning 20 years, is expected to create around 3,400 jobs, generating over $3 billion in state and federal taxes along with adding $16 billion to Pennsylvania's GDP.

Constellation Energy's president and CEO, Joe Dominguez, highlighted the necessity of carbon-free and reliable energy sources for powering critical industries such as data centers. He emphasized that nuclear plants are uniquely positioned to provide the required energy consistently throughout every hour of every day. The plant, renamed as the Crane Clean Energy Center in honor of the late Chris Crane, is projected to reopen in 2028, contributing significantly to the state's economy.

Governor Josh Shapiro praised Pennsylvania's nuclear energy sector for its role in supplying safe, reliable, and carbon-free electricity that aids in reducing emissions and fostering economic growth. Despite concerns from state activists regarding potential taxpayer funding for the plant's revival, Constellation Energy remains committed to the reopening of the Three Mile Island reactor. The plant, untouched by the 1979 partial meltdown, promises to operate as an economic powerhouse serving Pennsylvania's energy needs.
