In a shocking incident, three 13-year-old middle school students from Plum Point Middle School in Calvert County, Maryland have been charged with hate crimes. County prosecutors have revealed that the students displayed swastikas, performed Nazi salutes, and made derogatory remarks about a classmate's religion. The harassment had been ongoing since December, and despite repeated requests to stop, the students persisted with their offensive behavior.

The victim, who had endured months of harassment, finally reported the incident to the Maryland State Police. Subsequently, an investigation was carried out, leading to charges being filed against the three defendants. Due to their underage status, their names have been withheld.

The charges have now been announced by the Calvert County State's Attorney's Office. Although they did not provide specific details about the derogatory remarks, State's Attorney Robert Harvey emphasized Maryland's foundation on religious tolerance, stating, "It is frankly astonishing that nearly 400 years later some people continue to persecute others based upon their religion."

The charges will now be forwarded to the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services for further action. The Plum Point Middle School authorities have not yet commented on the incident, but the school system's website includes a statement denouncing racism, bullying, discrimination, white supremacy, hate, and racial inequity in any form within their school community.

This incident comes amidst rising concerns about increasing instances of antisemitism in Maryland and across the nation. A recent report released by the Anti-Defamation League revealed that antisemitic incidents in Maryland had nearly doubled over the past year. Maryland Governor Wes Moore, in response to the report, condemned the increase and emphasized that "hate has no home in our state."

As the legal proceedings move forward, this case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of fostering tolerance, inclusivity, and respect among students. The authorities are dedicated to taking appropriate action against hate crimes, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all students within the state's educational institutions.
