Irvine police apprehended three Chilean nationals suspected of being part of an international organized crime ring involved in a series of residential burglaries, according to authorities. The arrests took place during a surveillance operation conducted by officers on Friday evening in the Turtle Rock and Shady Canyon neighborhoods, areas recently affected by residential burglaries.

Authorities disclosed that officers noticed a suspicious vehicle in a parking lot during the surveillance. Later, as the vehicle drove away, an officer conducted a traffic stop and found three adult males inside. The individuals, who were not local residents, raised suspicions as they possessed several items consistent with burglary tools, including pet deterrent, shoe covers, gloves, and masks, stated the Irvine Police Department.

The totality of circumstances led investigators to believe that the trio was casing the area with the intent to commit residential burglaries, resulting in their arrest. The suspects face charges of conspiracy to commit burglary, providing false information to a police officer, and possession of burglary tools.

The driver was identified as Julio Cordova-Martinez, aged 55, while the passengers were Ricardo Navarete-Loyola, aged 19, and Leopoldo Jara-Araya, aged 57. All three individuals are Chilean nationals. After their arrest, they were booked into the Orange County Jail.

The recent spate of residential burglaries in Irvine has left many residents feeling uneasy and concerned about their safety. "It's really scary," expressed Melissa Hickman, an Orange County resident. "I feel like Irvine is one of those cities where you're supposed to feel safe."

The Irvine Police Department urged anyone with pertinent information relating to the investigation to come forward. Detective Ryan Nigg can be reached at nigg@cityofirvine.org or contacted at 949-724-7183.
