**Could Giannis Antetokounmpo Find a New Home with the Toronto Raptors?**
As soon as the NBA Finals wrap up, attention will shift to whether Giannis Antetokounmpo will request a trade from the Milwaukee Bucks and which teams might step up as potential suitors. Speculations are rife about the ideal destination for the star forward, with considerations like living in states with no income tax (such as Florida and Texas), staying within the Eastern Conference, and joining a championship contender.
Among the usual suspects like the San Antonio Spurs, Houston Rockets, and Brooklyn Nets, an intriguing yet under-the-radar option is emerging: the Toronto Raptors. Despite not fitting the mold of a title contender next season, there are reports of mutual interest between Antetokounmpo and the Raptors, according to Doug Smith of the Toronto Star.
Any trade to bring Antetokounmpo to Toronto would come with a hefty price tag. Owed approximately $54.1 million for the next season and under contract until 2027, acquiring him would require the Raptors to give up significant assets. Key players such as Scottie Barnes and Brandon Ingram are reportedly off the table, given Barnes' central role in the team and Ingram’s recent three-year, $120 million extension. This leaves RJ Barrett's contract, valued at around $27 million for the next season, as a potential trade piece.
However, it remains uncertain whether Milwaukee would find Barrett an appealing return for Giannis. Barrett averaged 21 points, six rebounds, and five assists in his first full season with the Raptors following a trade from the New York Knicks in 2023. If Barrett isn't seen as a sufficient focal point, the Raptors' draft assets might sweeten the deal. Toronto holds all its future first-round picks and the No. 9 pick in the upcoming draft, which would likely be included in any trade package, alongside future first-round picks and several pick swaps.
To balance the trade financially, additional players like Jakob Poeltl, Gradey Dick, and Ochai Agbaji could also be included. While such a move would deplete Toronto's roster depth, the remaining core of Barnes, Ingram, and Immanuel Quickley, alongside Antetokounmpo, might position the Raptors as formidable contenders.
Ultimately, the decision lies in how much the Raptors and president Masai Ujiri value bringing Antetokounmpo on board and whether they are willing to part with promising young talent to vie for another title.
