Less than 18 months after its introduction, Tesla is reportedly discontinuing Steam support in its vehicles. The company had previously announced in December 2022 that popular games like Cuphead, Sonic, and Cyberpunk 2077 would be playable on Tesla's S and X models through a native beta Steam app. However, according to Electrek, Tesla has now decided to reverse this decision.

In a brief statement sent to customers awaiting delivery of their S and X models, Tesla stated, "Tesla is updating the gaming computer in your Model X, and your vehicle is no longer capable of playing Steam games." The company emphasized that all other entertainment and app functionalities will remain unaffected.

The reason behind Tesla's move to drop Steam support from its vehicles has not been confirmed. However, it is believed that existing Tesla owners who have already been using the app will not be impacted by this change.

This is not the first time Tesla's gaming features have come under scrutiny. In 2021, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched an investigation into Tesla's Passenger Play feature. In response, Tesla made Passenger Play "unusable" while the car is in motion, thereby restricting the functionality of Steam to be used only when the vehicle is parked or being charged.

While the discontinuation of Steam support may disappoint some Tesla owners, it remains to be seen whether the company has plans to introduce alternative gaming features in the future. As Tesla continues to prioritize innovation in its vehicles, customers can expect further developments in entertainment and app functionalities.
