Angela Chao, the CEO of Foremost Group and sister of former US Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, tragically lost her life in a Tesla accident on February 11. The incident occurred near her private ranch in Blanco County, Texas, and authorities are now considering the possibility of criminal activity.
According to The Wall Street Journal, it is believed that Chao may have accidentally put her Tesla in reverse while attempting to make a three-point turn. Her vehicle was found submerged in a pond on her sprawling 900-acre ranch, located approximately 12 miles outside of Austin.
While Blanco County Sheriffs initially reported that Chao may have "succumbed from being under the water," they have not provided specific details about how the Tesla ended up in the pond. This has led some individuals, including hedge fund manager J. Kyle Bass, to question if the car was hacked.
Bass expressed his concerns on X, raising doubts about whether the Blanco County Sheriff's Office has the technical capacity to investigate the Tesla logs for potential tampering or hacking. This has caused the case to be viewed with increasing suspicion.
In a letter obtained by Business Insider, a public information officer from Blanco County stated that, although the incident was initially considered an "unfortunate accident," it is now being investigated as a criminal matter until sufficient evidence can rule out any criminal activity.
The investigation and probe have remained unsolved due to the lack of official comments from the Blanco County sheriffs. It is still uncertain if they will be able to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the accident.
According to interviews conducted by The Wall Street Journal with Chao's acquaintances, county officials, and a review of law enforcement documents, it appears the incident occurred during Chao's four-minute drive back to her ranch from a Lunar New Year celebration with friends. Chao reportedly called one of her friends shortly after leaving, explaining that she had mistakenly put her Tesla Model X SUV in reverse instead of drive, as she had done before. This led her to back over an embankment and into the pond.
No comment has been received from Tesla regarding the incident and the company's spokesperson has yet to respond to media inquiries outside of regular working hours.
Experts previously stated that individuals have only about a minute to exit a sinking vehicle. Friends and the ranch manager rushed to the scene after Chao's distress call, but due to the remote location and challenging terrain, emergency responders had to leave their vehicles and walk to the site.
When Chao's vehicle was finally towed out of the water, she was found unresponsive. The Journal's report does not provide further information on her condition.
The investigation into Angela Chao's tragic Tesla accident continues, with authorities focusing on the possibility of criminal activity. Further updates from the Blanco County Sheriff's Office are awaited as they work to piece together the events that led to this unfortunate incident.
