In a commanding display of basketball prowess, Team USA secured a resounding victory over Puerto Rico, finishing group play undefeated and clinching the top spot in the knockout round of the Paris Olympics 2024. The United States overcame an early scare from Puerto Rico, ultimately delivering a decisive 104-83 win.
Puerto Rico started the game strongly, taking a 29-25 lead after the first quarter. However, from that point onward, it was all Team USA. Led by Anthony Edwards, who showcased his skills as the team's No. 1 option, the Americans demonstrated their dominance on offense. Edwards delivered an outstanding performance, scoring a game-high 26 points on an impressive 11-for-14 shooting.
The scoring load was well-distributed throughout the Team USA lineup. Joel Embiid added 15 points and embraced the role of the villain, engaging with the crowd at Pierre Mauroy Stadium, which had previously booed him. Jayson Tatum recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while LeBron James contributed 10 points, six rebounds, and eight assists. Kevin Durant and Anthony Davis also scored in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Despite Puerto Rico's promising start, their efforts were ultimately overcome by the relentless dominance of Team USA. Jose Alvarado led Puerto Rico with 18 points, supported by Ismael Romero with 12 points. However, their collective performance could not match the intensity and skill displayed by the United States.
With the win, Team USA completed group play with an undefeated record of 3-0, joining Canada and Germany as the only teams to achieve this feat. The Americans finished with the largest point differential in the bracket at +64, further cementing their status as the top seed in the upcoming quarterfinals, which are set to begin on Tuesday.
The quarterfinals will see Team USA face their next challenge at 8:30 a.m. ET. As the tournament progresses, the American team appears determined to continue their impressive form and strive for gold at the Paris Olympics 2024.
