In a shocking development, two suspected squatters have been apprehended in connection with the death of a woman whose body was found inside a duffel bag in a New York City apartment. The suspects, a man and a woman, were taken into custody without incident in York, Pennsylvania, on Friday morning, according to a spokesperson from the New York Police Department.

The victim, Nadia Vitel, 52, was discovered dead inside her late mother's apartment in Manhattan's Kips Bay neighborhood on March 14. Police were initially dispatched to the apartment for a wellness check after Vitel's son grew anxious due to his inability to reach his mother by phone. Accompanied by the building's superintendent, he made the grisly discovery of his mother's body concealed in a duffel bag inside a closet.

It appears that Vitel had travelled from Spain to prepare her late mother's apartment for a family friend to move in. However, the police have reason to suspect that illegal occupants, who had been squatting in the vacant apartment for three to four months, were responsible for Vitel's tragic demise.

According to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny, security camera footage shows Vitel arriving at the apartment on the same day as the two suspects. Authorities believe that Vitel unexpectedly stumbled upon the squatters, who allegedly carried out a fatal attack, resulting in her death. The New York City Medical Examiner's Office has classified Vitel's death as a homicide, citing blunt force trauma to the head as the cause.

Following the gruesome incident, the suspects fled the scene in Vitel's stolen car. However, their escape was short-lived, as they crashed the vehicle in Pennsylvania. Local law enforcement responded to the accident, and it was only the next day that the police, after running the license plates, discovered the car's connection to the wanted suspects in the New York homicide case.

At present, the identities of the two suspects have not been publicly disclosed by the police. CNN has reached out to the US Marshals Service for further information on the ongoing investigation.

This tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the perils of illegal occupation and the need for continued vigilance in monitoring vacant properties to prevent such horrific events from occurring in the future.
