A suspected case of meningococcal disease has been reported at Miami University's campus in Oxford on February 23, 2024, at 11:04 am EST. The university officials stated that the rare disease, which can be serious and life-threatening, poses a low overall risk to the campus community. Meningococcal disease is transmitted through respiratory droplets, saliva, or spit, commonly through activities like kissing, sharing food, or living in close quarters.
Symptoms of the disease include fever, stiff neck, and headache, and individuals are advised to seek immediate medical attention if they start experiencing these signs. The Butler County General Health District, with the support of Miami University, is reaching out to students who may have had close contact with the affected student to provide guidance on symptoms to watch for and offer prophylactic treatment.
University officials have assured that those not contacted by the health district can assume they were not identified as high-risk close contacts. Concerned individuals can contact the Butler County General Health District at (513) 863-1770 for further information or assistance.
