In a tragic turn of events, the suspect wanted in the killings of a New Mexico state trooper and a South Carolina paramedic has been apprehended by law enforcement officials. The suspect, identified as Jaremy Smith, was taken into custody in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, on Sunday.
According to the New Mexico State Police, Smith was captured after leading police on a chase that resulted in a shootout involving at least one deputy from the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office. The suspect had been the subject of an extensive manhunt since the fatal shooting of New Mexico State Police officer Justin Hare and the slaying of South Carolina paramedic Phonesia Machado-Fore.
The incident began when Officer Hare responded to a call for assistance with a disabled vehicle on Interstate 40 near Tucumcari early Friday morning. As Hare approached the vehicle, the suspect exited and engaged in a brief conversation about repairing his tire and getting a ride back to town. Without warning, the suspect pulled out a firearm and shot Officer Hare, twice.
Allegedly, Smith then pushed Officer Hare into the passenger seat of the patrol car and fled the scene. Despite the officer's distress signal, he did not return, leading to a search for him. Eventually, Hare's patrol car was found abandoned and crashed. Hare was later discovered critically injured by the side of a road and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
As the investigation continued, it was revealed that the car Smith was driving during the encounter with Officer Hare belonged to Machado-Fore, who had been reported missing by her family. Tragically, Machado-Fore's lifeless body was discovered in Dillon County, South Carolina, prompting authorities to issue a warrant for Smith's arrest in connection with her murder.
Sheriff's deputies from Bernalillo County spotted Smith driving a car in Albuquerque on Sunday morning and initiated a chase, which led to his eventual arrest. The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office confirmed the occurrence of a deputy-involved shooting in the Unser and Anderson Hill area of southwest Albuquerque and stated that a multi-agency task force is investigating the incident.
The New Mexico State Police Chief, Troy Weisler, expressed determination in bringing Smith to justice during a news conference, where he publicly called out to the suspect, "Jaremy Smith, we are coming for you." With Smith now in custody, authorities can proceed with the warrants charging him with Officer Hare's murder.
It has been revealed that Smith, aged 33, has an extensive criminal history stretching back several decades in South Carolina and has ties to the Albuquerque area. As the community mourns the loss of Officer Hare and Paramedic Machado-Fore, their families and fellow officers find some solace in the fact that the suspect has been apprehended and will face justice for his alleged crimes.
An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday to determine the cause of Machado-Fore's death. The investigation into the tragic events that unfolded in New Mexico and South Carolina continues, as law enforcement officials work diligently to understand the motives behind these senseless acts of violence.
